Now, the real question here is this: How many smoking records has he broken thus far?
jrrtoken
Hm, looks like I get toi use this again. Funny how our culture worships these so called "role models" that are athletes.
Ctrl Alt Del
I can't begin to fathom out what kind of pressure an athlete like Phelps has on his shoulders. Being so young and with such expectations on his carreer and the invisible, but clearly palpable, obligation to win on everything he competes on, it's nearly understandable that he would look for escapism. It doesn't make it right, but those are some factors to considerate.
CommanderQ
Oy, he definately made the wrong choice this time. He may have a lot of pressure, but there's a lot better to do than smoking marijuana and such. His family is probably pretty mad at him...hopefully he stops, drugs can do a pretty nasty number to the human body. Well, Kellogs doesn't like him anymore.... Adavardes
Wait, wait... Nope, don't care. The man did great things, but I really am not going to judge him for doing what he wants with his body. That's his business, regardless of whether or not this judgmental country of ours decides it's okay to tell him that he did the wrong thing, because they live vicariously through his medal-winning. There are more important things in the world to worry about.

Commander Obi-Wan
Heh. I think they him penalized too much, but he was caught breaking the law. I, myself, do not see a problem with marijuana. But, hey, he was caught.

Chevron 7 locke
I feel sorry for the guy. like Ctrl Alt Del said: This guy has enormous amounts of pressure on him. And now he's going to have the press bugging him. Still...It was his own fault he let someone take a picture of it

jawathehutt
It's only a bit of chronic, if anything it will make him too lazy to train lol. As a swimmer so I can relate to this. At least as far as the state that I swim in, a very large percentage of the top tier swimmers smoke from high school level on up. Its well known by pretty much every other swimmer and its really not at all that uncommon to be at a party with half the the people I raced against a couple of hours previous to the party up until about a month before state. Its a painkiller and it gives everyone something to do or talk about that isnt swimming related at the party. In response to what you said, unless hes never done it before which is unlikely, probably not, I know people who've been stoned or recently stoned at practice and you cant even tell, one of my best friends dropped time every race he swam and he smoked before every meet

jawathehutt
I may be disfunctional right now, but doesn't that reduce your breathing efficciency? Most of the pools that are around me are pretty low quality pools. We spend at least an hour and a half every day breathing in barely filtered air filled with chlorine, chemicals in cosmetic products, oil from skin, basically everything that comes off of you when you go in water, and most of our breaths are going to be pretty deep. Smoke may not be great for the lungs but the amount of it you inhale while smoking its certainly not as bad as what we inhale constantly at a practice, you can open a window or go outside while smoking and get some fresh air at least. Really the only impediment I've ever seen is when someone not used to anything stronger than caffeine does it and then swims too soon, their technique can take a bit of a hit. Darth Avlectus
I figured if I didn't get to this soon, someone else would. QFEmphasis: Hm, looks like I get toi use this again. Funny how our culture worships these so called "role models" that are athletes. Well, idol worship IS a folly, is it not? Now, the real question here is this: How many smoking records has he broken thus far? Hmm. I couldn't answer that. Imagining he is in tremendous shape and his cardiovascular system has probably been conditioned to all get-out...I'd say he could probably smoke like a train. I mean, hell I got a buddy who smokes cigarettes who ain't in good shape and yet he has stamina and can run for hella long. Whenever he goes to a city in lower elevations, too, he can leave people in the dust. I would imagine if this has been a little thing of his for a while--that he is a closet pothead and has been so for years--he could probably put normal people to shame given his capacity. And the stonerz stamina he would have from years of smoking. True enough. However, marajuana is mild compared to some of the stuff I have seen people do. I prefer to not do that stuff personally--no I'm not religious either. I have just seen that it makes most people who smoke it lethargic and unmotivated. (Of course their munchees is perfect to capitalize on if you happen to be a vendor of snack foods at the moment. ) I should like to point out that it does not affect everyone the exact same. There are types that it actually does the opposite to--that instead of making them wind down, they get kind of wired-up and start doing more stuff. Phelps could be one of those types. I think he learned his lesson: Not to let people take pictures of you breaking the law. Exactly--assuming this hasn't caused him to swear this stuff off forever. Nah, it won't kill you, just seriously **** you up. Assuming you don't pass out first? Omigawd, another celebrity caught smoking! Wait, i thought this was supposed to be called "news". Hm... OH:eek: I c wut u did thar {sigh} Yes and it seems the country has nothing better to entertain on.
