Its around 2:30am ATM. Movie was just released here in NZ 2 hours ago. (first release, iirc: they seem to be doing the timezone thing like Apple) The movie will be wrapping up for the diehards about nowish.

I plan to watch it tommo- er, today but at less vampirish hours. I wonder if i'll get a seat (i didn't book)... perhaps seeing it later may be a good thing; I suspect the amount of squealing female tweens may reduce in direct relation to the amount of the release time of the movie.

That, and it may give me time to think up an excuse to get out and see it since absolutely no one IRL knows that i am in fact, a fan. :ninja2:

I'll probably also grab more Twilight merchandise while out on my secret mission.

Gosh, I can almost taste the estrogen.

:p

Gonna see the movie? Opinions?

Any other secret fans?

And I'll admit to pre-judging this film based on the first one, which I watched last night. While some of it is shot very well, pretty scenes don't excuse awful dialogue, ridiculous characters and a terrible story.

These films and books make JK Rowling look like a literary genius in comparison.

And also TERRIBLE ****ING ACTING. The first one seemed like they cast people for it based on the level of contrast between the dark circles around their eyes (because they are frightening creatures of the night that risk looking sparkly if they venture out into the sunlight) and their pale, oatmeal-like skin.

Alrighty, just saw it this morning.

And i'm happy to say it is in fact much better than the first one. I saw Twilight a few days ago right after reading the book, and was a bit disappointed with it. It was indeed merely mediocre.

But i enjoyed New Moon a helluva lot more... perhaps because I purposely didn't read the New Moon novel before seeing the movie, and it had the desired effect: i didn't really know the plot, so it kept me interested all the way through.

The biggest qualm i had with Twilight was the horrible special effects. You can totally see that they're swinging around on wires. The super speed was also lame. This wasn't the case with New Moon; effects were 3d this time, i think. It wasn't outstandingly amazing, but it was up to a level that you would expect. (budget was roughly doubled)

I don't think i have a calibrated sense of judgment for this kind of thing, so i will not comment about them for the movies or the books. (This wouldn't be the first time i liked something that apparently was lame.) But hell, 85 million copies of the books sold in 5 years must mean something, right?

ATM, I can't choose between Edward and Jacob. I just can't :hurk:

As to as Edward having a nigh perfect appearance in the story canon - that's plotholed in the movie since Taylor Lautner looks far better than Robert Pattinson. (It's not that Pattinson looks bad, its just that Lautner looks better than him)

It was interesting to see Dakota Fanning as Jane. Nothing really to say about it though.

Also interesting was how Edward got wasted by that Volturi guy. It goes to remind that Edward's uniqueness as a vampire lies is his mental abilities, not his physical, as was the impression given in the Twilight novel. (simply because he is one the very few vampires shown asserting physical strength in it, which is just basic vampire strength)

I wonder how James or Emmet would've fared against that guy... Emmet would probably have a better chance; James' forte was in his extreme sensory abilities.

And Bella... what kind of ability would she get as a vampire? :eyepop

Interesting #3: I don't remember hearing Bella's line from trailer: "No, Edward! DON'T!"... Perhaps i just missed it...

For a fan such as me, and since i didn't know the plot, the movie was great. I was buzzing with excitement at the end of the film (the ENDING! :eyepop), so i walked out of the cinema straight into the bookstore and bought the book. (Special Edition, which is getting to be notoriously difficult to obtain now )

To fans of the series: I don't have to tell you to go watch it, of course. (just... if you're female and 13, try to keep the squealing down, huh? :p)

To prejudiced outsiders: If you want to see New Moon, i recommend giving the first novel and, if that tickles your fancy, the first movie a fair chance. (i had no intention of ever reading Twilight till just about a week ago when i read it due to some very weird circumstances, and found i loved it. If you're a guy, like me, and worried because it's a girlish novel - a romance novel, you can always keep it a secret and have it as a guilty pleasure :D. I'm also sure some chicks out there will dig the idea of male Twilight fans.. you never know.) If you don't like it, then hey, its just a book - no obligations. ;)

A quote from Wikipedia quoting someone else:

"Meyer is said to have been involved in the production of Twilight, but her novel was substantially more absorbing than the unintentionally funny and quickly forgettable film"

I'm a girl, I've read all 3, and found all 3 to be offensive, brainless fodder designed to make a certain part of the female anatomy happy. Characters are shallow to say the least. Bella is an outright offensive and degrading female role model whom would seemingly kill herself if she couldn't spend every waking moment with an abusive pedophile (She is 17 and he is over 100; He's a pedophile) virgin sex god.

And Bella... what kind of ability would she get as a vampire?

She gains the ability to give birth to a baby that literally rips her hip in half due to its super strength and her own pathetic vamperic abilities. Its a shame she didn't die in child birth... or when she had sex with Edward, as he apparently had enough strength to nearly kill her while doing so... Yeah, not even going to comment on that.

But hell, 85 million copies of the books sold in 5 years must mean something, right?

All it means is that it was overhyped, and that a great many teenage girls and even older women are shallow twits.

Here is what I want you to do:

I want you to take your special edition. Ok, now I want you to burn it.

Still with me?

Ok, now go buy some Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams books. Try to find the DiskWorld stuff if you can. Take those books in. Absorb them. You may feel bad about your Twilight book at first, but know that you're destroying what essentially amounts to a book about Battered Wife Syndrome.

If you must have some romance novels, you'll actually find better romance plots in many animes... which speaks for how awful Twilight truly is.

the first movie a fair chance.

There was no first movie. The entire thing was Edward and Bella looking into each other's eye... and Bella biting her lip a LOT (an acting issue the actress has carried in all of her movies). The only actual plot occured in the last like, 20 minutes... just like how the only plot came to be in the last few chapters of the book.

Sorry, but if I'm going to read meaningless drivel for 90% of a book I'll go read something made by Ayn Rand.

If you're a guy, like me, and worried because it's a girlish novel - a romance novel, you can always keep it a secret and have it as a guilty pleasure

And I have nothing against guys who like romance novels. I do, however, have a problem with the Twilight series being called a romance series. It is, if anything, an almost entirely one-sided Battered Wife Syndrome "romance" with Bella going head over heals for a Pedophile man who, despite being over 100, still hangs out at high schools.

You can make the argument that he's immortal and all that jazz, but that doesn't change the fact that she is still originally 17. And that there are plenty of vampire chicks his age. And that, despite being a sex god and hanging out at high schools for 100 years... he's still a virgin who has never dated and has absolutely no idea how to talk nor interact with a girl.

The story could have just been about two High School sweethearts going out on dates. Hell, you could have just given him super powers. The fact that there is such an age difference, and such an unbelievable lack of ignorance on his side despite being over 100... It can really only be assumed that this is, in its entirety, a fetish pandering book for girls who dream about older men, but with the safety of a younger guy (Trust me, its a fantasy of a -lot- of girls to be with their teachers or similar older figures).

The cherry ontop of all of this is the fact that Edward is also just a pretty face. Under the pretty sparkles he is an abusive, ignorant jerk. He's just pretty, and girls love him really only because of this. Edward, within these 3 books, could have raped Bella outright and I still think it would have sold just as well. Its that shallow, and its designed to be that shallow.

It is basically the equivalent of Harem stories for guys. Ditsy, submissive girls all too willing to take their clothes off for the lone, pathetic guy. Its fan service, and fan service sells really well. Bella is pretty much hated by most of the fanbase, but she conveys the feeling of all the girls watching this very clearly: they all want to have sex with Edward, and they want it very, very badly.

I've read and seen romance stories pan out that have had me crying for hours. The only thing I felt while reading these books and finishing them was shame.

I'm also sure some chicks out there will dig the idea of male Twilight fans.. you never know.

To this day I still have no idea why a straight guy would enjoy these books at all. There is no romance, plot, or anything resembling contemporary books within this series. It is 90% Edward's shining abs, and little else. The pages are just designed to give girls something to do on a lonely night or shower. If you aren't interested in Edward... why would you touch them?

I'm probably being insulting, but I'm legitimately baffled by your enjoyment of the books. What do you see in them? What keeps you coming back for more? What do you like about the characters?

The basic female response is "because he is a man steak". I'll be interested in your response.

But hell, 85 million copies of the books sold in 5 years must mean something, right?

It only seemed to gain popularity verging on ridiculous proportions after the first film was released. It was only then that I saw legions of girls marching through bookstores clutching the books, which leads me to believe the only reason they bought the books is because the main actor in the film is 'hot'.

I borrowed the first book from my cousin to see what the fuss was about, and barely made it through. Throughout the whole thing, the overriding sense I got was that the author is seriously sexually repressed.

And I agree about the main character being a terrible role model for women (not that I know much about positive role models for women) but a willingness to give up everything, including your life for a man is definitely not a positive one. And although the target audience is already aware of the birds and the bees, this justs sends a bad message.

I'm fairly certain that if I, a 34 year old man, were to go watch these films, I would be placed on a sexual predator list. It was bad enough after my ex's daughter and her friends saw the film one of her friends started doting on me.

Quite frankly, if I were looking for a vampire loving female, I'd rather have one who liked Bram Stoker's vision of a vampire than the "Twilight" vampire. Granted, I have a woman who, like me, is sick to death of the whole vampire craze. Gimme zombies any day over yet another vampire.

(shrug) I'll see it with my sis when she comes home for Christmas. The first movie was completely lame. I don't have high hopes for this one.

Still, the one trailer I've seen for it looked okay. I hope the wolf rips Edward's face off. Not likely (sigh).

PS: I agree with pretty much everything you said, Avery.

I haven't seen this yet but lucky me I'm being dragged to the movie tomorrow night.. I've been looking into it a bit tho and I'm really surprised that the artists on the soundtrack are actually good, so I figure I'll just sit there and focus on the music until the movie is over.. You can check out the bands on the soundtrack here : http://blogs.msg.com/themonitor/2009/11/17/twilight-new-moon-mania-photos-video-and-more/

I'm a girl, I've read all 3,

4. there are 4 books.

All it means is that it was overhyped, and that a great many teenage girls and even older women are shallow twits.

I think most of us humans are. (Shallow, that is :p )

Here is what I want you to do:

I had no intention of reading Twilight. It was through accidental circumstances that i read it, and found i liked it. I've heard of Terry Pratchett, and even thought of reading some long before i heard of Twilight. But to be honest, the animosity in your post is sort of putting me off...

If you must have some romance novels,

I'm not a hunter of romance media. I just have no qualms against it when i come across it, unlike some people who react in a rather childish "Ew! Cooties!" way.

You can make the argument that he's immortal and all that jazz, but that doesn't change the fact that she is still originally 17. And that there are plenty of vampire chicks his age.

...So Carlisle and Esme are also perverted?

You also must realize that almost all the vampire chicks his age have no intention of fighting their urges and literally are bloodthirsty monsters.

I think the fact that he's 100 is ok is because of the author's concept of her brand of vampire immortality. People act differently when they're older. Experience has a lot to do with it, but i think it a also has something to do with physical changes in their brain too. This kind of immortality "freezes" them forever in one state, and while they may change quite a bit due to experience, their mentally affecting physiology is still whatever age they were frozen at.

But really, its just a reason to transport a Jane Austin kind of man into the modern world. A caliber of man that has all but died out. So no wonder women swoon over him: how many men today are that civilized? Not many. Not me, either, but i intend to be. Because, lets face it, men: women are the most wonderful creatures on God's green Earth. So why not treat them like it?

(unless of course, the woman in question finds it offensive for some convoluted reason. in that case, the appropriate response is to honor her wishes)

(Trust me, its a fantasy of a -lot- of girls to be with their teachers or similar older figures)

hn... That's... strange. I didn't and wouldn't know about that, so i'll trust you on it.

Under the pretty sparkles he is an abusive, ignorant jerk.

"Abusive..."? Well, i havn't finished reading the series, but could you explain this? (unless it involves any spoilers, in which case just inform me of that only :) )

To this day I still have no idea why a straight guy would enjoy these books at all.

If you aren't interested in Edward... why would you touch them?

I had to think about this, because i hadn't acknowledged the reasons why before. I'll be very honest:

I picked it up because i wanted to see why it was so huge.

And then i kept reading, because, i wanted insight into the female mind, to see what they liked so much about this series and why they loved Edward Cullen so much. And i found the reason.

You claim that it's merely because of the physical, but i think its more than that. I think its the way he treats Bella, the way he cares for her above all else, his gentle behavior and the way he's so chivalrous. Such a person is very rare to find nowadays. I wanted to see what was there, and if i could learn anything form it.

So i'll do that. I'll try to improve myself this way.

Then, as i read on, i got hooked on the story. You say there is "no story", but you're commenting on the quality of the story. The story didn't seem substandard to me, but maybe that's because i don't know what's good and what's bad. Thus, i enjoyed it.

After i read the first book, i had a strange feeling. Then i realized what it was: Bella. I liked Bella. It wasn't very much, but I chuckled at myself for it, and how strange this was: liking a fictional character like that. It kind of wore off after a little while. (I still like her though)

But seeing the first movie messed things up a little. The movie and the book are a bit different, and after seeing it a few times, it was hard to read the book again because my canon-loving brain was trying to reconcile the vivid scenes and characters from the movie with the ones that i had imagined in the book. I stopped trying; it wasn't fun.

When i saw New Moon without reading the book, it made the movie great, but took a lot away from the book, because i knew what was going to happen. Its an annoying choice for me: movie, or book.

The New Moon novel didn't get me like Twilight did. Now im just going to keep going along with Eclipse because i need to know what happens. I hope I enjoy it, but i don't really know.

I'm probably being insulting,

Yes, yes you are. But i'm not crazy about Twilight or anything, so i don't hate you at all for it or anything. But really, its just an entertainment IP. Why get so worked up/bitter about it? Its big now, but it'll just fade away from the spotlight like all the other worldwide phenomenons, with a fanbase still attached to it. Like Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings, for example.

It only seemed to gain popularity verging on ridiculous proportions after the first film was released. It was only then that I saw legions of girls marching through bookstores clutching the books, which leads me to believe the only reason they bought the books is because the main actor in the film is 'hot'.

I never payed attention to it back then, so i wouldn't know.

But the "main character" is hot... (no, i mean the other main character :D)

Ok, well, not "hot", but she is very nice looking. I think i may be a fan.

@thread: Wow, so many haters, and not one liker. I thought Ahto was.. bigger... than this...

I mean, there has to be some people who like it... Statistics demand it.

Maybe there are, but are afraid reveal themselves because the It crowd are on the Bitching Bandwagon.
