Your First Car

Well, this has been inspired by all the birthday threads that seem to keep popping up. As I share a birthday with Snafu7 and we got the same announcement thread, I must admit to being a trifle jealous when I compared my birthday loot to Snafu7's new car, being the petty, vindictive bastard that I am. So I got to wondering.

As my birthday-mate got his first car, the black 1999 Saturn, what was the first car that you, the random LF passerby, owned and operated?

Mine was a 1975 Volvo 164E. A green Volvo 164E. A GREEN Volvo 164E. Not that somewhat-cool British Racing Green either. I'm talking lime sherbet meets Kermit the Frog 1975 Volvo green. Yes, it was my mother's old car. She owned it since new, and little-old-lady drove it back and forth from the supermarket and back from 1975-1990. My dad is a Class 1 health hazard behind the wheel, so he never drove it anywhere. It had less than 50000 original miles on it when they gave it to me as my Grad 91 present. My mom had named it "Betsy". Seriously. Even I couldn't make that up.

Here's a couple of images of the same kind of car:

Yup, there it is. It had the 3.0l straight6 engine, so between that and it being fanatically well maintained meant it still had enough guts to give motorists nightmares when in the hands of a drug-addled 16 year-old. Of course, it didn't last very long in my hands, and it met its end in a wreck in 92-93. My mom still rags on me for it to this very day if you bring it up.

So, what was your first car? Bonus points for pictures.

I had a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme like this one

I miss that old timer.

Have to love the 72 Cutlass, my best friend had one in high school.

My first car was a 1972 Mercury Comet. I still love that car, mainly because those older cars were easier to work on. The thing I don't miss about it is the fact it had no A/C. Air condition is a requirement for driving in Texas. :bounfire:

1982 black Chrysler LeBaron with about 72,000 miles. My mom and I bought it together, and then I bought it from her, since she doesn't drive. It was named Nightrunner. I drove it til it had over 100,000 miles on it and finally decided since it was starting to have problems that it was time for a new one.

Yeah, I drive my dad's car, a 2004 Red Chevy Impala, but he works at home and he never goes anywhere besides to go get gas for it or to the bank or grocery on occassion, so I drive that. I don't see a car of my own in the near future, dunno what I'm gonna do after frosh year in college..

My parents bought me a 5 speed manual 1995 Subaru Legacy(not new even then) for getting my Eagle Scout award, which I still have to this day. It's a perfect skimobile, and also not too shabby at autocrossing and rallying.

The 2.2 liter boxer four-banger makes some pretty noises up around its horsepower max, 5700-5800 rpm, but because of the pathetically low 6000 rpm redline, I have to shift. It's way entertaining on freeway onramps and mountain roads, even though I can't hold a gear long enough for any decent acceleration.

Here's a picture of my first car, a 1967 Ford Galaxie 500 Sedan. It had a sweet 289 V8. I was working at a Boy Scout camp the summer I turned 17 and was coming home for my birthday when it lost all acceleration going up a hill. I stopped on the shoulder of the interstate and saw steam, so I thought, "Great! It's overheating again." Being Mr. Prepared Boy Scout, I went to the trunk and got out the jug of water I always carried for my overheating-prone car. I opened up the hood, and flames jumped out at me. I quickly poured the water on the fire and got it out. But that was the end of the road for that car. Ahh...the memories.

Mine was a 1975 Pontiac Catalina like the one to the right in this picture.....

Except that mine was white with blue interior. Had a Pontiac 400ci engine in it and it would haul @$$ one the highway! It was involved in 3 accidents before it finally got totaled! They don't make 'em like that anymore!

Oh, that's a low blow. :)

How would that be? I'm only joking. :p

Seriously, some of us have commutes long enough that it would take 2 days to get to work if we did it on foot, so motorized vehicles (of any kind ) are not optional.

You misunderstand me. I think cars are perfectly fine bits of technology (our economy would be ruined without them), but I prefer taking walks myself. :)
