Personally, I enjoy a lot of different games. Everything from brainless button-mashers, to FPS shoot-em-ups, I like them all. But the games I get really hooked on are RPGs. I can spend hours at a time just leveling up my character. I love it.

So, what are your favorite types of games?

RPGs are my favourite for the moment. Spent lots of time playing the Escape Velocity series, Planescape:Torment, Baldurs Gate 1, enormous amounts of time playing Baldurs Gate II + ToB, Neverwinter Nights + Expansions, the KotOR games, Morrowind and most recently Oblivion.

As for Action "RPGs" I played Diablo and Diablo II for quite a while. I also played through Dungeon Siege and Icewind Dale but didn't like those as much.

First person shooters can be rather fun as well, in particular in a FPS/RPG hybrid like Pathways into Darkness, Deus Ex (1 & IW) and VtM:Bloodlines, but I've played a fair bit of "normal" shooters like the Marathon Series, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, The Dark Forces + Jedi Knight series, Half-life, Halo and Farcry, in varying amounts. :)

Sports games usually don't interest me, might as well do that in "real life" rather than on a computer.

I stay well away from MMOs, I know how addictive multiplayer games can be and I'd rather not take the risk of being enthralled by one. :D

Fighting games don't interest me, too overly violent for no other believable reason than being violent. (Which could be said of many FPS as well I suppose, but somehow it feels differently. :))

Played a bit of puzzle games (much) earlier, like Myst, Riven, Journeyman Project and Iron Helix. Haven't touched much from that genre the last 8 years or so though. Mostly played those before for the exploration part, tend to get too frustrated when getting stuck at one point for too long to really like the genre. :)

Since my multitasking is at the level where I just barely can eat and watch television simultaneously I usually don't enjoy RTS games either, to much stress to keep track of many different things and babysit braindead AI characters in real time. I have played Warcraft(1), Starcraft, Myth:The Fallen Lords and MythII:Soulblighter though, and enjoyed them, but not much more from that genre.

As for the other category, that would be the Civilization, Master of Orion (1 & 2) and Alpha Centauri turn-based strategy games, which I've spent too many hours playing in the past, and occasionally still play when I feel like it. :) I'd put ST:Bridge Commander here as well since I don't know what genre to classify that game in.

(Spent some time modding pretty much all of them to some degree as well; tends to be half the fun with a game to tweak it to your liking. ;))

RPGs for me--I can never mash the buttons fast enough to enjoy the others to the same degree.

I'm with you, stoffe, on the MMO's--I'm afraid if I got going, I'd spend way more time than I really can afford to give to it. That, and I couldn't justify the cost for playing only a few hours a week at most because of the other time demands in my life.

I play all types of games. Big fan of some Fighting franchises like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. FPS's like Half-Life and Doom. Action games like God of War and Ninja Gaiden. Though for the past 4-5 months I've played nothing but RPGs aside from Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Half-Life 2 and I even tried Rumble Roses XX :p So I voted RPGs due to my recent KOTOR, TSL and Oblivion addictions.

I'm mostly an RPG/Sports person. Also I like to mix it up between consoles and PC, certain games in my opinion "belong" to certain platforms of gaming. For example, I think that First Person shooters, belong to the PC you can't beat the mouse for accuracy in those games, with maybe the one exception being Goldeneye for the 64, crazy fun. Sports games on the other hand belong to consoles and a controller, just seems awkward to me to try control a runningback with my WASD keys. However I've dabbled in the MMO stuff, I played SWG and it was strangely addicting and tons of fun, until they started changing the game and even if they improved gameplay mechanics they ruined the fanbase and eventually the game, but MMOs definetly suck the money right out of your pocket. A few of my favorite series though are, FF, KotOR, Kingdom Hearts, Ace Combat, and of course KotOR.

Also RPGs for me - mostly egoshooters, they're the most interesting... adventures and stuff... Well, okay, to name it: Tomb Raider (although i only have the fourth game). And Kotor of course, otherwise I wouldn't be here.

I also joined a RPG in the web, played in a Forum by just writing the actions of your chars. It's a ST-Play that takes place on a klingon Starbase.

Most definitely RPGs. They usually tend to have interesting stories, and unlike shooters, they test your mind over how quickly you can mash butons. Leveling up characters, finding new items, doing quests... it just never gets old. Although it is sometimes tempting to try out a MMO, I stay far away from them. I would hate to be hooked to something I have to pay monthly fee$ for.

RPGs also have better, and much more addicting, modding potential IMHO. I've probably now spent about as much time playing the KotOR series as I've spent tweaking it, and I've easily spent twice as much time in NWN's toolset as I have in the game.

Other games may seem more flashy, but you just can't beat RPGs in replay value. :D

Not too much of a surprise to see the RPG votes with a significant lead in a forum that is for RPG's, eh? :D

Although KotOR and TSL were the first RPG's I played I have to say I'm hooked on the RPG genre now. I'm one that enjoys stories, especially science-fiction based stories.

I've played some FPS games like JK, JK II, as well as Doom II, Heretic, and Hexen II (I know I'm dating myself on those :D). In RTS I've played Starcraft and its Brood War expansion, Command & Conquer: Red Alert and I seem to recall playing the original Warcraft back in the day too. As for turn-based games I didn't catch the first Civilization game but did play Civilization II extensively then got into Heroes of Might & Magic II and III. Other games I've played are Descent and Descent II but I always got lost flying through all those tunnels. :p

I stay well away from MMOs, I know how addictive multiplayer games can be and I'd rather not take the risk of being enthralled by one.

 Guess that makes four of us. :D I keep fighting the urge to try out SWG for the same reasons the three of you provided.

As someone who has played SWG, my best advice to you is keep fighting that urge to stay away from that game. It was a great game, but in my opinion it has gotten progressively worse, not because of the gameplay mind you, the gameplay is fine, but the community has dissolved for various reasons and without all the people, an MMO gets kind of pointless.

well, i've always, always loved my FPS games, especially in multiplayer. action is fast, frantic, and often just a bit chaotic. it still gives me one heck of an adrenaline rush. there are several single player titles that can give me a good rush, too. a frantic RTS game can give me a similar rush, but it just isn't quite the same.

otherwise, i really enjoy RTS since it can give you both a bit of a rush combined with some good ol' fashioned strategy (aka, thought) as to what you're going to do next to defeat your opponents.

stealth action games are also quite good, but only because of the challenge to them. in particular, the Splinter Cell and Hitman series are absolutely fantastic in giving you a sense of doing things the way you want to do them, but only if you can figure out how to do them first. stealth action titles are definately the games of the thinking person that also enjoys a bit of action.

as for RPG's (the apparent forum favorite), i really haven't gotten into them until i played the first Kotor due to my false perception of RPG's as being rather boring. the games are quite interesting, and since most everything boils down to the role of the dice, it really makes you think and strategize about things. however, i still haven't really gotten into them with the exception of The Elder Scrolls series. Oblivion freakin' rocks, and i'm just now getting into TESIII: Morrowind. i want to finish Fable (i started up the Xbox version at a friends house), and i've already played Jade Empire (which was pretty good, but not spectacular like Kotor). i'm also wanting to pick up Neverwinter Nights, but i'm still on my TES kick, hehe. otherwise, i haven't brought myself to getting into the Final Fantasy series or other of the so-called 'great' RPG's.

as for other genres, i only play fighting games on a rare occasion against friends (and, oddly enough, i still beat them). i really like football, so the Madden-series is one that i've played quite often. i've only played one tycoon game, but then only due to my interest in theme parks and roller coasters. if you haven't guessed it already: the Roller Coaster Tycoon series. i proudly own every title and x-pack. :D
