Astrotoy7 Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Ive been watching a few scifi shows recently, and want to know if theres anything Im missing or dont know of. Anime not included. This is just referring to live action stuff. Id prefer things set in space/in the future as opposed to X Files/Jericho type stuff What Ive seen: *All Trek *Firefly *Andromeda *Doctor Who/Torchwood/Sarah Jane Should I watch? *New Battlestar Galactica... it seems to have lasted. I started watching it in S1, that guy imagining that blonde girl(Cylon) put me off a bit. Less psychobabble, more space battles. *Stargate.. never saw the movie. MacGyver in space? Seemed low tech effects wise *Babylon 5 - most reports are glowing, I probably will check this out eventually *Farscape - seems to have positive reviews - dont know much else about it *Crusade - dont know much about it (apart that its a B5 Spinoff) Any other show that im missing out, that was made in the last 5-10 years?? mtfbwya
Rogue15 Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Stargate is really good. i missed out on the last few seasons. coudln't get the time when it was on right, and miss an episode and i was like ok whatever =\
Chevron 7 locke Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I would have to recomend Stargate The show is pretty cool with some cool characters, and the show mixs Mythology with Science fiction. Its quite good
jrrtoken Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Lost technically is sci-fi. It's really one of the few shows worth watching these days, IMO. MST3K. All right, maybe it's not really sci-fi, but there is the overall setting... Try to pick up some DVDs of The X-Files, if you can.
The Doctor Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 ... you're seriously asking if you should watch Babylon 5? I wasn't aware there was a single self-respecting SciFi fan out there who hadn't seen it. o_O Definitely start with this. As a Doctor Who fan, though, you have no right to criticise Stargate for its effects. The series started out good, but once they defeated the Goa'uld System Lords it went straight to ****. Seriously. Also, avoid Atlantis at all costs. Miserable extension of a once glorious franchise. How it lasted even as long as it did is beyond me. The new Battlestar also started out quite well, but it became a bit too... metaphysical, for my tastes. Definitely a cool reimagining of a timeless campy classic, though. Ignore Farscape. Completely. Believe me. Worst. SciFi. Ever. Lost technically is sci-fi. It's really one of the few shows worth watching these days, IMO. ... you're kidding, right?
Rogue Nine Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Babylon 5 was boring as poop. BSG is whar it's at.
Astrotoy7 Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 hehe. Yes indeed, I was a child when I saw all the early DW and didnt really notice the effects I do now though! They used to play it here at 6pm.. and I quite clearly remember even though I was 5 (when they showed it here), the buzz around school when we all knew Tom Bakers doc was about to regenerate. Like in the UK, DW enjoys a very mainstream popularity here, and has done for as long as I can remember. Whereas alot of the US shows got shown at 10 or 11pm Of course, things are different these days with PVRs and online [free and legal] tv Looks like B5 and Stargate are winners though Might check out some later BSG eps to see how its turning out. >>The reasons I never got around to B5 initially are complex and melodramatic. That stuff has died down now, leaving me some time to watch these with my 1080p projector on a 3m diagonal screen mtfbwya
knight 12167 Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I don'y know if ths is sci-fi but i quite enjoy "A Town Called Eureka"
Ctrl Alt Del Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Stargate all the way. You'd be making a favor to yourself. If you can't swallow Richard Dean Anderson removing symbionts from alien bodies, then watch Stargate Atlantis instead of Stargate SG-1. McGyver won't show up - ignore the first episode - nor the alien symbionts. Plus, watch ten minutes of an episode and you'll see your low-tech.
Astrotoy7 Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 Plus, watch ten minutes of an episode and you'll see your low-tech. I think I spotted it in the very early days and was measuring its effects against STTNG. I imagine as CGI developed, it looked quite nice later on. I enjoyed the effects in Andromeda, as well as Andromeda herself[/mriaow] mtfbwya

I imagine as CGI developed, it looked quite nice later on. I enjoyed the effects in Andromeda, as well as Andromeda herself[/mriaow] I had guessed so. The earlier episodes were actually pretty good by the time they were done.
The Doctor Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Ooh. I don't know if it really counts as Science Fiction, but it certainly seems to be so in my eyes: The Eleventh Hour. The CBS version is a sad shadow of the original ITV version (which starred Patrick Stewart, btw), but it's still a great show.
Jae Onasi Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 If you can find the series "Nowhere Man", that one was enjoyable. It was a single-season series and it came out probably about 15 years back, but hubby and I loved it.
GeneralPloKoon Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Stargate Atlantis/SG1, better start on SG1 first. You gotta see the New Battlestar Galactica.
Darth InSidious Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 The 4400, Babylon 5, SG: Atlantis, Stargate: SG1 (ss. 9-10), the new BSG. I enjoy/like all of these, so on those grounds alone you'll probably hate them.
True_Avery Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 X-Files simply for how ridiculous awesome it is. I'd watch more Sci-Fi, but I refuse to watch Sci-fi channel for their terrible scheduling problems, and overall bad quality shows. I'd rant more about the shows, but I'll summarize it and say that I've yet to find quality in almost any of it.
Lantzen Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Just start watch Stargate SG-1 (10 seasons) and when you finish with that you have Stargate Atlantis (5 seasons) and you will be set for a while. The first season of Stargate SG-1 feels pretty lowbudget, but also remember it's over 10 years old (But it's still good). But it's just get better and better for evry season, and Atlantis have a good budget from start. And you don't need to watch the first Stargate movie, it's really don't have so much to do with the serie and there are diffrent actors in it.
Astrotoy7 Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 I enjoy/like all of these, so on those grounds alone you'll probably hate them. Not at all. Thank you for your suggestions @jmac.. that holo was all grainy and rubbish... mustve been running on a Holobuntu netbook Thanks for the great suggetsions all. Someone elsewhere also suggested Nowhere Man(as Jae did) and also Alien Nation. It only lasted one season with a few TV movies that followed. Looks like B5, BSG and SG1 are on the playlist for the next few months... mtfbwya
Prime Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 BSG is definitely worth checking out. I found it has gotten better as it has gone along. Plus I like my sci-fi with cool ships and evil robots.
Trex Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 If you like recent Doctor Who, you might like to look up Primeval , ITV's attempt to copy the success of DW. Personally I'm not too keen of it, but I know plenty of people are.
The Doctor Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I can't believe I forgot this one, too: Quantum. ****ing. Leap.
Astor Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Ooh. I don't know if it really counts as Science Fiction, but it certainly seems to be so in my eyes: The Eleventh Hour. The CBS version is a sad shadow of the original ITV version (which starred Patrick Stewart, btw), but it's still a great show. I was lucky enough to catch the original when it was on ITV - I loved it. It's a shame they won't renew the series for some more episodes.
Boba Rhett Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Quantum Leap Semi-Spoiler: The last episode of Quantum Leap makes the rest too hard to ever watch again.
