Simple enough. Just put down any signature or quote that really inspires or stands out from others. If you select another user's signature, then I hope you include that his/her name as well.

Some of my favorites:

"I'm always in front of you." This was from General Kuribayashi to his troops before entering a battle on Iwo Jima.

"To be alone is to be different. To be different is to be alone."

"Instead of the invaders, we have become the invaded. Our allies have conquered us without firing a single shot. I call upon Cardasians everywhere... resist. Resist today. Resist tomorrow. Resist until the last dominion soldier has been driven from our soil." - Casey Biggs as Legate Dumar (DS9)

"You want a name? I'll give you one: my name, Polenin, Mical. Captain, K-19!" - Liam Neeson (K-19 the Widowmaker)

"I'm going to dig up your mother's skeleton and **** it!" - John Rubano

This is THE WORST insult I have ever heard, but it is quite amusing.

"God Is Dead" -Friedrich Nietzsche

Two things I like about this quote: Its actual meaning, and the dimwits that misinterpret it.

"The efficiency of the truly national leader consists primarily in preventing the division of the attention of a people, and always in concentrating it on a single enemy." -Adolf Hitler

"What luck for the rulers that men do not think." -Adolf Hitler

"Mankind has grown strong in eternal struggles and it will only perish through eternal peace." -Adolf Hitler

"Our teachers were absolute tyrants. They had no sympathy with youth; their one object was to stuff our brains and turn us into erudite apes like themselves. If any pupil showed the slightest trace of originality, they persecuted him relentlessly, and the only model pupils whom I have ever got to know have all been failures in after-life." -Adolf Hitler

"No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country.

He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."

-Patton

"If everyone is thinking alike, someone isn't thinking." -Patton

Those are the ones at the top of my head.

Heh, here's one that includes General Patton during a press conference during the March across France.

Reporter 1: So, General Patton, is it true that the Nazis will be going underground once we hit Germany?

Patton: Yep, 6 feet.

Reporter 2: General Patton, is it true that American forces are going through a supply crisis?

Patton: Well, we just can't get 2 loaves of bread and 3 small fishes to expand as they used to, any other questions?

There's a couple, I might post more as they come flooding back to memory.

"Trust is earned, not given away." -Michael Dorn (Worf, TNG)

"What'd you all order a dead guy for?" -Adam Baldwin (Jayne, Firefly)

"I believe in God like I believe in the sun. Not because I see it, but be cause 'by' it, I see everything else."

- C.S. Lewis

I love that one too :D

Most of the quotes by Terry Pratchett. Examples:

"Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life. "

"It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It's called living. "

"The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. "

"You can't trample infidels when you're a tortoise. I mean, all you could do is give them a meaningful look. "

Val Kilmer in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang too Robert Downey Jr.:

Kilmer: "Look up "idiot" in the dictionary. You know what you'll find?"

Downey: "A picture of me?"

Kilme: "No! The definition of the word idiot, which you f***ing are!"

That whole movie blasted me away. Every snappy insult was just parried by an even greater one.

Harry: Look, you want to see something cool?

[Harry pulls out a copy of a Gossamer book with a hole in it]

Harmony: Oh cool! This stopped the bullet, Harry.

[Harmony pokes her finger through the hole in the book. Harry taps his bullet wound]

Harry: No, not really.

Stuff like this. Excellent.

Excellent quotation, Fish, I love that one as well. Here's another one by C.S. Lewis that caught my eye. This one, I think, was pretty clever whe I saw it.

"Can a mortal ask questions which God finds unanswerable? Quite easily, I should think. All nonsense questions are unanswerable."

Oh, and here's one more that I found quite enjoyable.

"Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art...It has no survival value; rather, it is one of those things that give value to survival."

That's the couple I found really interesting and clever.:D

"With the first link the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."

Would it surprise anyone if I told you that the above is a science-fiction quote? Can anyone name the character or episode?

Other favorite quote -

"I'm the key figure in an ongoing government charade; the plot to conceal the truth about the existence of extraterrestrials. It's a global conspiracy actually, with key players in the highest levels of power that reaches down into the lives of every man, woman, and child on this planet. So, of course, no one believes me. I'm an annoyance to my superiors and a joke to my peers. They call me Spooky. Spooky (name). Who's sister was abducted by aliens when he was just a kid, and he chases little green men with a badge and a gun, shouting to the Heavens or anyone who will listen that the fix is in and that the sky is falling, and when it hits,it's goinna be the ****storm of allll tiiiime."

It's Captain Jean-Luc Picard, I know that much. From a TNG episode, not a movie. I don't remember the episode title, though it involves a hearing on the Enterprise and a Romulan spy. I'll remember the episode name at 3am tonight just as I'm about to drift off to sleep, I'm sure.

If I wanted to be really nerdy (which I do), it's actually Picard quoting someone else - Judge Aron Satie, and the episode was 'Drumhead'.

Churchill: "Ah Clement, I have no quarrel with you, but in my experience, when you see somthing big, you tend to want to nationalize it!"

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." -Winston Churchill

"God Is Dead" -Friedrich Nietzsche

QFT

"Our teachers were absolute tyrants. They had no sympathy with youth; their one object was to stuff our brains and turn us into erudite apes like themselves. If any pupil showed the slightest trace of originality, they persecuted him relentlessly, and the only model pupils whom I have ever got to know have all been failures in after-life." -Adolf Hitler

I love the irony of this.

Anyways -

This thread was a mistake; where to begin??? I could, and probably will go on and on, some of my favourites;

"Love may forgive all infirmities and love still in spite of them: but Love cannot cease to will their removal." - C.S. Lewis

"Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person's ultimate good as far as it can be obtained." C.S. Lewis

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them". – Mother Teresa

"Love does not claim possession, but gives freedom". - Rabindranath Tagore

"Monsieur l'abbé, I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write". - Voltaire

“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” -- Aristotle

"He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have". -- Socrates

"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher regard those who think alike than those who think differently." - Friedrich Nietzsche

“At every step one has to wrestle for truth; one has to surrender for it almost everything to which the heart, to which our love, our trust in life, cling otherwise. That requires greatness of soul: the service of truth is the hardest service. What does it mean, after all, to have integrity in matters of the spirit? That one is severe against one's heart...that one makes of every Yes and No a matter of conscience.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

"It is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book".

Friedrich Nietzsche

"Whoever is open, loyal, true; of humane and affable demeanour; honourable himself, and in his judgement of others; faithful to his word as to law, and faithful alike to God and man....such a man is a true gentleman". --

Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Great spirits have always encountered opposition from mediocre minds. The mediocre mind is incapable of understanding the man who refuses to bow blindly to conventional prejudices and chooses instead to express his opinions courageously and honestly". --Albert Einstein

"Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions". -- Albert Einstein

"Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point". - C. S. Lewis

"It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance". -- Robert F. Kennedy

"Emancipation from the bondage of the soil is no freedom for the tree". - Rabindranath Tagore

“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

-- Steve Jobs

"Jesus resisted evil by refusing to give in to it. He showed the power of goodness through weakness by refusing to let his life be compromised by those forces that sought to take over his teaching. He rejected force or even seeking to persuade people to follow him by public displays of miracles – instead he brought forgiveness and the possibility of a new start to people from every walk of life, from tax collectors to priests and prostitutes. He lived be the law of love and applied it not matter what the status of the person. He called his followers to put God and love first no matter what the personal cost and said the few who would be willing to take this hard, lonely path of living a life of goodness would face persecution and possibly death. The centuries since have provided abundant evidence that he was right". – Peter Vardy
