Reclaimer
Do you think this is a good idea? I mean, why advertise in someone else's game? That's kinda of stupid if a person is focused on the game, and not like the area around themselves. Here's the official article at slashdot.org According to this, it's going to increase to over $700 million by 2010.
Alkonium
I think it all depends on the game. Ie. fantasy RPG: no, sci-fi shooter: no, real-world racing sim: yes, sports game: yes.
Aurora Merlow
i don't like the idea personally, but like you said for a racing game like a grand prix games i suppose i would mind advertising
Bob Lion54
I vote "maybe." In some games, it can actually add to the realism. Think of all the ads in the outfield at a baseball game. I would be kinda cool to see real companies in game. Though it wouldn't work in some games. An ad for an I-pod would seem really out of place in Oblivion, for instance. I also have to worry about game quality. If Im a game maker, my money comes from sales. Hence, I want to make a good game that will sell well. If developers start to think they can make crappy games but make up for slow sells by selling ad space, then it would be a dark day for gamers. Something else that has me worried, now that Im thinking about it. Sinse it would be hard (if not impossible) to include ads in a fantasy RPG, would developers be more inclined to make games they could fit ads into? Would we see a drop in the amount of fantasy games being made and an increase in "real world" games?
stingerhs
i'm all for advertising in games if either it keeps game prices where they're at now (since they'll go up because of inflation) or if it manages to lower prices. but i'm also of the opinion that ads shouldn't be limited to just games set in the modern timeframe. now, it wouldn't be a bad thing, say in the GTA-series, if the ads were all the retro-type ads of whatever era they were in so they fit in with the game. it could also work for futuristic games as well if things are designed so that they fit properly with the atmosphere of the game. now, i'm not to sure about an RTS or a fantasy-based RPG, but for other types, it could work if advertisers and developers can work together to make things fit in context with the game. Lantzen
In some games, like a shooter where you running around in maybe a city, there could be advertising , but if it should be ex) Buy X-Box now in Kotor, that should suck. So it depands on the game.
Prime
I don't mind advertising in games where such ads would be present in the world they are modeling. For example, sports games, or shop signs on a street.
Astrotoy7
yeah, advertising is natural in sports games especially. But if Kyle Katarn was drinking pepsi max in the opening cutscene to JK4, that would suck mtfbwya
Ztalker
But if Kyle Katarn was drinking pepsi max in the opening cutscene to JK4, that would suck *falls back staring horrified at the ceiling* If they can 'explain' it, it could be cool. Maybe a message board on the coruscant of JK 4, were volunteers for Rogue Squadron 4 are asked? It could be infused with the timeline... Vendor: Here, PC...the jedi robe you ordered... PC: Thanks..hey...what is that little wave-like logo in the inside? Vendor: Ehrm...nothing...little manufactering mistake...it's certainly not the logo of Nike... *sounds of lightsaber activating*
Commander Obi-Wan
I don't care. If they created the game and publish it, hey should have the right to do it.
TegSkywalker
If they are still going to charge $50 for PC and $60 for nextgen console games, then no way will I put up with ingame ads. The whole point of offering ads is to make a program cheaper or free like radio or old fashioned TV. Of course this mentality goes out the window when you pay a monthly fee for cable TV and still get commercials during your programs. Same goes for watching 20 minutes of ads before seeing a 90 minute movie you paid $8 to see. Meh. Offering $50 or more for a video game and plastering it with Coke ads would be really selfish on the publisher's end and sour the game industry. I want an ad free experience when I play a video game because $50 is still a lot of money considering our budgets are wasted on other things like gasoline. Hannibal
i'm all for advertising in games if either it keeps game prices where they're at now (since they'll go up because of inflation) or if it manages to lower prices. I'm with stingerhs I picked maybe too. If it doesn't lower prices, I pick I don't care. Next Gen games are going up to $60 if adds can bring them back to $50 or lower I'm all for it. FiEND_138
I don't really care, as long as it's in the right genre; sports games, modern time line, etc.
Snafu7
I see nothing wrong with it, it's a great way for companies(sp?) to get their product out their, and it's a good way for game developers/publishers to get a little more money, and its not like it's gonna make the game bad or something. But I agree it should really only apear in sports/racing games, or games similar to that.
Emperor Devon
Absolutely not. Think how out of place it would seem if you were loading the level for the final battle with Malak when the loadscreen hint said 'Drink Pepsi!'

Det. Bart Lasiter
If it's not forced on me I don't mind it. For instance if in Half-Life 2: Aftermath I'm running down the street and happen to spot a Pepsi billboard, I don't care, but if I'm playing KotOR 3 and spot the same Pepsi billboard on Telos (I'll probably remove it in any case), I'll be pissed. Samuel Dravis
In game advertising is good - in context. If it doesn't fit the game, it is evil. If it does, it is good. *hopes he doesn't Subway ads in NWN2*

stoffe
I think it all depends on the game. sci-fi shooter: no, I wouldn't be terribly annoyed if there were Coca Cola or Pepsi vending machines in a game like Farcry where there are already vending machines, but for some fictive brand. Same goes with the Deus Ex games. But it depends on the game. Where the product placement fits into the game world without ruining the setting, I don't mind it at all. Pepsi can fine in a sports game or in a game which is set in a modern city but not in Oblivion. I somehow doubt Pepsi Corp would be very interested in placing a Pepsi Ad on a blood-stained wall next to a Corpse Masher with some burning, hanging humanoid carcasses nearby. Doesn't quite give the right assocations for your product, does it?
