RUMOR: Star Wars Legends?

Lucky it's so lenient.

Haha, no. Refer to Avery's post.

Clarification: HE is lucky it's so lenient for his neck of the woods.

I thought that was implied by the obvious differences in ratings. :¬:

Plus when it comes to Games--Amreican releases are not always best. I liked MegaMan Zero. Then when I saw the japanese version had blood and disembowelment (least as gory as a 2-d platformer on GBA gets) it was aggravating.

"ZOMG blood!" WTH? >_> I think kids can handle it.

Yes, because Lego Star Wars, the plethora of safe Clone Wars games, and all the flying sims are just chock full of mature themes, story, and great characters.

Laugh if you want. I've found far better from the Kotor Fanfic sites, and even from our own Fanfic section. And, after reading the latest SWTOR updates, better than Bioware's current standards.

Down here, films have a R18+ rating... video games on the other hand do not. This is a HUGE issue down here considering that a lot of game get shoehorned into MA15+ and some other games are refused classification and can't be sold down here unless they edit it and resubmit it... for example L4D2...

(This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.)

Get to working on the next JK game, I want to see more character development dammit! I mean, srsly, I know Kyle Katarn is practically the God of Star Wars, but why make four games about the guy and then make a game where he's nothing more than a background character, and dump a whole new set of characters in there, and then NOT EXPAND?

Okay, Lucasarts, your top priority games should be:

TOR

Star Wars: Battlefront 3

Jedi Knight:____

Star Wars: Republic Commando 2.

The laugh isn't directed at the idea of many games lacking maturity; in most cases, you won't get argument from me (don't knock TIE Fighter, though). The incredulity is directed at the amount of credit you give to the franchise's fan fiction.

I think perhaps you haven't done a whole lot of reading...there are some very good writers out there, including some right here in our own CEC.

Same subject material, different genre. That would be like saying Galaxies was a follow-up to Rogue Squadron.

It's an MMORPG. There is going to be a heavy emphasis on the RPG aspect of this game, much more than what I see in the MMOs I've played (Guild Wars and LOTRO, with the PvE aspect of LOTRO being fairly story driven already). To say that TOR is completely different would be incorrect, given what I've read about the game. It's not the SPRPG that many of us want, but that does not mean role-playing and a detailed, heavily story-driven mode of play is tossed in the trash as some believe.

I'd love to see a game for a more mature audience. LEGO is fun, but it's intellectual pablum.

@ TKA--you need to read some of machievelli's fanfics, along with TA's, JediAthos', or just about anyone who's won the staff or fan choices the last few years or won Javyar's cantina. At kotorfanmedia read anything by Jiara, who works in the writing field professionally. Her stories are wonderful. Just about all the authors (too many to list here!) in the categories listed above have stories with remarkable depth and detail. They're also darn good reads, too.

Oh, I'm sure he has read them, but I guess the majority of fan-fics he's read are not mature. The only fan-fics that can get away with immaturity, IMO, would be parodies, comedies, spoofs, and the like.

Censorship boards aren't an exact science and opinion often enters into it, there are some general guidelines however.

Mild adult themes are often a PG rating. Things like mature comedy without gratuitous inuendo, sexualisation or any language warnings; pubescent issues, mild conflict. 13yrs is the advisory age for PG.

Complicated adult themes usually gets the M rating, which include sexualisation and inuendo, fantasy violence, supernatural themes, mild horror, mild language warnings and implied or actual questionable or criminal behaviour among the leading characters (no drug use). 15yrs is the advisory age for viewers of M censorship.

Gore, extreme language, partial nudity, strong violence, supernatural horror and drug use get the MA15+ rating, for which you must be at least 15yrs to purchase the material (or gain entry to viewing it at the theatre), but 18yrs is the advisory age.

Full frontals and "soft porn" or explicit (simulated) sex scenes, and extreme violence (a gore fest and brutal violence throughout the movie) get the R rating. This rating is almost never used anymore because it is mostly covered by the MA rating. Back in the old days there never was an MA rating and supernatural horror, gore and extreme language or violence were the AO rating. Culture has changed a little since then and even "soft porn" can be made to fit into the MA classification if tastefully directed.

It is mostly older, remastered movie releases which feature long scenes with full frontals among the main characters which are rated R under the new system (because they had some gore elsewhere that got them an AO rating anyway, so it used to make no difference if they put gratuitous full frontals for added adult entertainment).

That leaves only the X rating which is stricly 18yrs and over, and the classification is simple. Any erect male or female secondary genitals (ie. inner labia or mucous membranes) on film get the X rating. Depictions may drop to an R rating (say a cartoon porn). Only external, non-erect or unaroused genitals keep to an R rating if the actual filmed item.

Generally speaking, because of conservative parental concerns about video game culture and its impact on child psychology, it is not unusual for any video games to be treated more harshly by the censorship board than movies.

A video game with less violence or gratuitous content than a film might get a higher censorship rating than it, presumably on the basis that many hours are spent in front of the game where only 90-120mins are spent in front of a movie, often just the one time.

What this little novella of Australian film and entertainment media censorship concludes is that a game getting the MA rating may just be particularly combat based with some implied sex scenes and most particularly, supernatural horror of any sort (an exorcism of demonic possession or the like depicted). Also frequent language issues and gore of course, but essentially you'd probably find if Kotor and TSL were released tomorrow instead of when the new censorship system was still under review and there were fewer gore based video games around, they would be very close to getting an MA rating. As it was it was probably the strong choice based theme of playing a lightsider (which the censorship board probably viewed as the object of the game) which saved it, the Kotor series have moral themes and these are a strong M or PG in nature (something parents want their kids to think about early on).

This new game probably doesn't have the same morality play as Kotor RPG, is more combat/reward based and thus would be viewed by the board as gratuitous violence without purpose, with elements of supernatural horror.
